So I was driving to campus in my Panther (alone), with the traction control off, and absolutely no weight in the back (not even the spare tire). It's raining. I approach this corner too quickly because the light was green.

Kinja'd!!!

It's raining. I get half way around the corner and hear that all too familiar sound of the tires losing traction, engine RPM climbs rapidly. I don't think much of it because if you own a Panther with the 16" inch wheels, you know it does this constantly with the T/C off. However, something I have never experienced before, the car fishtails and would have span out of control had I not corrected and avoided the curb by a few meters.

Injuring only my pride, I went on my way as my heart began to pound after the fact. I turned the traction control back on.

Power out and hold the drift.

Good recovery. I approve. I drove a RWD dynasty without TC. No TC back in 1992.

I've never understood why people turn off the traction control while driving on the street.

Besides the fact that I'm young and dumb, the traction control on Panthers makes it difficult to accelerate from stop lights because with all season tires, 20% throttle will spin the rears until the TC shuts off the power. It's irritating.

Yeah...so, traction control is there for a reason. With very few exceptions, unless you're on a race track there's no reason to turn it off. Modern traction and stability controls can do things that humans can't (e.g., brake individual wheels). Leaving it on is the best way to keep the rear of the car from passing the front.

Well, shockingly, there aren't many pictures out there of Grand Marquis doing anything other than ferrying 85 year olds from their retirement home to Wal*mart. This is the only other one I have saved.

The first thing I do after starting my car is turn off TCS. If I suddenly feel the need for some oppo I won't be shut down. I would have it disabled by default if I had the option.

I beg to differ. My '00 c230k loves to spin one wheel from a stop, especially when accelerating from a stop around a corner. It has garbage Toyo's that have about as much traction as an elephant does on ice. My traction control is so intrusive that it will kill engine power for 3-4 seconds sometimes if it senses too much wheel spin, and it is incredibly sensitive. But with traction control off and careful application of the throttle you will get some wheel spin but still accelerate nicely. I very rarely do this, but I feel there are situations where it comes in handy.

Congrats on being unable to control a low HP vehicle driven by millions of octogenarians who haven't been able to see past their wrists or feel their extremities since the carter administration in the rain?

Did that once in my dad's '93 Ford F-150. He'd called and thought he'd had a stroke (turned out to be Bell's Palsy) while I was at work. I'd borrowed his truck that day, so I explained the situation to my boss and hopped in the truck. It was raining and I'm not going to lie- I was going well over the speed limit almost the entire way home. At the yield-right, like the one in your picture but larger, I went the same speed I would in the dry, which is about 45mph.

In the wet? That's too fast for that old truck, haha. As soon as I'd dabbed the brakes, I felt the rear end wiggle and knew it was going to break loose as soon as I turned the wheel. So at least I was sort of prepared. And when it did break loose upon entering the corner, the weirdest thing happened: I did not give any fucks. No panic, no trepidation or anything. Just cool, calm, collected, and slightly annoyed, as I gave it a tad bit more throttle, kept my eyes where I wanted to go, and counter-steered.

I came out the other side smoothly enough, with a tiny little wiggle of the truck's hips, and continued on my merry, stressed out way. Picked up my dad, omitted mentioning the slide, and took him to the hospital, where they found out it was nothing life-threatening and gave him some medications for whenever it flared up again.

On the way home, we stopped for gas at the little gas station that's on the corner where the yield-right turn is. I didn't think much about it, but when we walked in, Angie, the lady who runs the register (small town), yelled "Heyyy! Tokyo Drift! How's it going?" and my dad just looked at me. Me? I looked at the honey buns and danishes and pretended to have not to heard. He asked Angie what she meant and she told him that she'd seen the truck pass by earlier, "going that way," pointing to the right, "except with the headlights pointed right this way, sideways as can be. I thought he was going to wreck it for a second there, but he just kept on going like nothing'd happened."

My dad looked at me, eyebrow raised. I just shrugged and replied, "Hey. You said you'd had a stroke." He laughed at that and Angie wound up hearing the entire story from the two of us. Since then, whenever I drive the truck and stop at her store, Angie always teases me about it, often times mentioning a buddy with a good deal on rear tires. Hardy har har... >.>

Nice, me too. I posted the other day about putting on a bit of a show for people when I got super sideways in that same corner during one of the rain storms!

If you ever want to meet up I'm always down to meet new car people over here, too many of them are people I don't want to hang with.

C230! YES! In my mom's C230 it's necessary to turn off.

Gravel when turning left? Gee that car is approaching quickly and I think you don't need much power for this so let's slow it down..... And this is with Continental DWS's
